Media Language and Representations Analysis
Post 1 – How is media language used in 2 media products to create meaning through constructing representations and following genre conventions?
The best way to answer this is by looking at the representations first, then look at how media language is used to create them...
What type of shot/music are they using?
What connotations do the colours they use have?
What does the set represent the time and place of the situation?
What does the make-up and hair used say about the characters/models?
What does the body language say about the attitudes of the characters/models used?
What connotations can the type of lighting used in the shot/scenes have? How does it help create representation?
Instructions:
If you chose to do Brief 1:
Choose TWO front covers and TWO double spread articles from educational magazines.
You should be prepared to analyse the distinctive media language elements appropriate to the brief chosen, listed below:
Magazines:
Layout
Typography
Use of language
Use of images
Key concepts you need to use in your analysis:
Media language.
Stereotypes (positive/negative).
Age, gender, race, nationality.
Questions to help you with your analysis:
The main characters on the front cover are parrots and penguins. One of the penguins is a baby. The parrots are presented as cute little birds that want to explore, which is positive. The penguins are presented positively as they are looking at the baby one, which would make children think they are the parents. The neon colour schemes for the penguin magazine help construct a brand identity as it is recognisable and people would see the colours and think of national geographic kids. There is a part in the parrot magazine that says rio2. This is a childrens film about a parrot which children may recognise and want the magazine. The penguin magazine has a part that says penguins of the Madagascar star chat. That is also a childrens film. The penguin magazine has lots of neon colours, which stick out and catch peoples ,especially childrens eyes. The parrot magazine has lots of shades of green. The penguins are looking at the baby one, which makes them seem caring and friendly. The parrots look curious and friendly.
What media language elements are they using to construct these representations? For this, don't just look at the obvious, look at everything around the people too, such as colour of text (magazine) or non-diegetic music in the background (video), mise-on-scene (video and magazine, online), etc.
The text is green, which is a natural colour, for both magazines.
How do logos and other graphics help construct the brand identity of your chosen products?
The logo of the eco kids magazine construct a brand identity as it is easily recognised by people
